FAQ’s about Hip Pain

  1. It can be common in a lot of office workers due to extended times sitting down, noticeably at the front of the hip. This front of the hip pain can also be due to the hip flexors overworking, common in runners or cyclists.
  2. Side hip pain is common in elderly women, due to the q-angle (angle from hips down to the knees) adding pressure onto the hip bursa (pocket of fluid), which protects the bone from the surrounding muscles and skin. If this gets inflamed it be quite sore.
  3. Hip pain can be common during/after pregnancy. During pregnancy the ligaments and muscles around the pelvis have to lengthen and therefore can stay quite lax which means the pelvis isn’t as supported as it was prior to pregnancy
  4. Inner hip pain can be due to overload, increase in running too quickly and therefore creating added stress on the labrum
  1. Front hip pain can be due to weak core and glutes, which in turn means the hips have to work more in stabilising the torso in sitting and the legs in standing, walking and running
  2. Side pain can be due to weak buttocks muscles, which help in hip stability. Weak buttocks muscles will put added pressure on the side of the hip muscles to help stabilise the hip. This can then irritate the bursa around the hip joint and create a dull pain which will make it hard to ascend and descend stairs as well as sleep on the affected side
  3. Labrum pain can be from overactivity at the front of the hip, which pulls the femur (thigh bone) up into the socket more and therefore creates more pressure on the cartilage in the hip socket. It can also be from a poor running technique. If you are an over strider you’ll bee putting upwards of 4x your BW through your hip which will then create added pressure of the femur pushing into the hip socket
  1. Due to the extensive amount of nerves and arteries around the area it can be if left untreated. If these areas remain tight then it can compress on the arteries or nerves and create issues with power, sensation and blood flow down the legs
  2. Labrum pain if left untreated can result in a decrease in cartilage in the acetabulum and therefore after a while create a bone on bone result which can result in the need for a hip replacement
Exercises for the hip mainly surround the gluteals (major buttocks muscle) and core (major trunk muscles). Depending on the injury you can see more exercises on our website

The hip muscles are innervated from nerves that come from the lower back, therefore if these nerves are affected it can create tight or weak feeling in the hip

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AN ADVANZ HEALTH APPOINTMENT

  1. Whether you book online or call to speak with one of our amazing admin team, you’ll find it simple and streamlined to make an appointment
  2. When you first come to our clinics you’ll be welcomed by our friendly team, before being invited to wait for your therapist in our comfortable waiting area
  3. Your therapist will then greet you and invite you into one of our private rooms. There, you will have a long conversation where your therapist will deeply listen to your story, hear your concerns and understand your goals.
  4. Next, your therapist will then perform a physical examination that will determine not only the cause of your symptoms (diagnosis), but also the underlying reasons for the injury (drivers). The assessment will include some measurements that can be used to track ongoing progress.
  5. A combination of hands-on treatment techniques and exercises will be used by your therapist in order to reduce pain, improve your alignment and mobility, and ultimately fix the root causes of your injury (the drivers), rather than just give you temporary relief.
  6. At the end of your initial consultation, your therapist will give you a detailed treatment plan, designed to fix your injury and get you back to 110% as fast as possible. The plan will include the total expected recovery time, the number of treatment sessions to book and your home-exercises. If your therapist believes you will benefit from one of our specialised 10-week-recovery-programs, they will discuss this with you.
  7. Our lovely receptionist will then help you to schedule the future appointments from your recovery plan and can also process your health fund rebate on the spot (if using private health insurance).
  8. And voila, you’re now well on your way to recovery!
